Frequently asked questions

What is the Union League Scholarship?

The Union League Scholarship is a transformative civic education and leadership development program for exceptional high school students committed to engaged citizenship. Selected scholars participate in a comprehensive four-year journey during their college years that includes:

  • Intensive study of American founding principles, history, and democratic institutions
  • One-on-one mentorship with accomplished Union League members
  • Leadership development through public speaking, critical thinking, and ethical reasoning
  • Annual scholars’ gatherings and ongoing educational programming
  • A community of like-minded peers dedicated to preserving American ideals of self-governance
  • Financial support (minimum $50,000 guaranteed over four years) to assist with college expenses and ensure accessibility regardless of family circumstances

This program connects scholars to the Union League’s legacy of civic engagement dating back to 1862, when the League was founded to preserve the Union and uphold American democratic principles.

Unlike traditional scholarships that ease a single financial pressure, the Union League Scholarship is a comprehensive investment in the whole student, clearing the path to transformative education, mentorship, community, and a life of civic leadership.

The 10-month selection process and four-year program structure create sustained impact through extended engagement with founding principles, allowing for genuine character development and deep civic learning rather than superficial exposure.

To qualify for the Union League Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA/SAI)
