Week-long seminars

Typically scheduled from Sunday through Friday in the summer, Founding Forward’s week-long teacher seminars are hosted at Union League Liberty Hill a 300+ acre private conference center and golf course in suburban Philadelphia. Each seminar has a single theme and consists of content-focused talks by highly regarded scholars (morning and afternoon) interspersed each day with activation sessions featuring either lesson demonstrations from master teachers and presentation from resource providers like Retro Report or Periodic Presidents. Finally, each seminar includes an out-of-classroom field study to historic sites, archives, and museums.

Week-long travel seminars

Motorcoach tour to multiple historic sites

Teachers board a motorcoach for six days (Sunday – Friday) of visits to historic sites (such as national parks, state parks, and private sites) connected to a specific era of American history. Each travel seminar is escorted by a public historian whose lectures provide context for the historic sites to be visited. Local docents and guides provide breadth and depth in the historic stories they share. Local museums with subject appropriate materials are also included, many offering classroom resources for participating teachers.

Three-day seminars

The 3-day (Friday – Sunday) seminar is a new category of PD program for Founding Forward held through-out the year. Each summit will include historic interpreters, a content-lecture from a scholarly expert, a faculty-led discussion of relevant primary sources, and an appropriate field study of historic sites, archives, and museums.

One-day seminars

This one day-seminar, held at the historic Union League of Philadelphia. will include historic interpreters, a content-lecture from a scholarly expert, a faculty-led discussion of relevant primary sources, and the ability to see some of the Union League of Philadelphia’s art and historic collection which is cared for by Founding Forward.

What our teachers are saying

I’m leaving feeling refreshed, inspired, and deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and share this experience with such an amazing group. Thank you for creating something so thoughtful, energizing, and unforgettable.
Danielle
Teacher, South Carolina
In retrospect, the greatest benefit for my students will be that I am more passionate and more inspired to learn on my own and speak about the founding with more passion.
Chris
Teacher, Ohio
The depth of knowledge shared by the facilitators, combined with the engaging discussions and collaborative activities truly enriched my understanding. Thank you for your dedication to fostering a love of history and empowering educators. I left feeling inspired and eager to share what I learned with my students.
Jocelyn
Teacher, West Virginia
Being with colleagues – the energy, the exchanges, the dynamic – can never be replicated online… The concept of being in the space where things took place is strong. My first glimpse of Independence Hall brought tears to my eyes, and standing in the room where the declaration was signed took my breath away.
Janet
Teacher, Wisconsin
