Description

Please note, this seminar is full. This intensive three-day seminar for educators explores the end of the Cold War, focusing on the pivotal roles of Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II, and Margaret Thatcher, alongside a comparative analysis of communism’s failures versus constitutional democracy’s strengths. Designed to equip teachers with historical insights and classroom strategies, the program blends lectures, discussions, and interactive activities. The seminar will include a field study visit to the Medal of Honor Grove on Founding Forward’s Valley Forge campus to examine the legacy of the legacy of Korea and Vietnam on the Cold War.

Key Figures and Their Impact
The seminar opens with a scholarly lecture examining how Reagan’s strategic policies, Thatcher’s economic reforms, and John Paul II’s moral leadership challenged Soviet influence. Participants will analyze primary sources, including Reagan’s speeches, Thatcher’s economic directives, and papal addresses, to understand their collective impact on global shifts. Small-group discussions will explore how these leaders’ actions inspired dissent within the Soviet bloc, fostering classroom-ready narratives.

Comparative Analysis and Legacy
The second day focuses on a comparative analysis of communism’s systemic failures—economic stagnation, suppression of freedoms, and centralized control—against constitutional democracy’s adaptability, individual liberties, and market-driven prosperity. Through guided debates and case studies, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, teachers will evaluate primary documents contrasting these systems. Interactive workshops will provide tools to engage students in critical discussions about ideology and governance.

This seminar empowers educators to teach the Cold War’s conclusion with depth, highlighting leadership, ideology, and historical consequences, while equipping them with resources to inspire civic engagement in students.

Thanks to a generous donor, Founding Forward will provide a $150 stipend to every accepted teacher to help offset expenses related to attending a Founding Forward professional development seminar.
