Join fellow educators on a unique professional development motor coach tour exploring the Revolutionary era from Charlotte, North Carolina to Washington, D.C. This immersive program blends historical discovery with classroom application, offering teachers firsthand experiences at pivotal sites of America’s fight for independence.

The journey begins in Charlotte with orientation and travel to the Buford Massacre Site, where the Waxhaws tragedy reveals how brutal encounters galvanized Patriot resistance. At the Camden Battlefield, educators will examine the costly American defeat and discuss lessons in leadership and resilience. The tour continues to the Battle of King’s Mountain, where Patriot militia secured a dramatic victory, and to Cowpens National Battlefield, showcasing Daniel Morgan’s tactical brilliance that turned the tide in the South.

At Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, participants will analyze how Nathanael Greene’s strategies, though technically a defeat, weakened British control. A visit to Alamance Battleground offers context on the earlier Regulator Movement, linking colonial unrest to Revolutionary momentum.

Heading north, the tour the Yorktown Victory Center where teachers will walk the ground where independence was secured in 1781. A stop at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s iconic home, deepens understanding of Revolutionary ideals, contradictions, and legacy.

The program concludes in at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. Teachers will leave with richer historical knowledge, primary-source strategies, and classroom-ready approaches to inspire students with the enduring story of America’s Revolution.

Please note: Participants should be prepared to walk significant distances, including up to one mile at a time, as part of the program. Some historic sites and other locations included in the itinerary may not be fully ADA compliant due to the age of the buildings and may lack elevators or other accessibility features.

About the Program

Teachers board a motorcoach for six days (Sunday – Friday) of visits to historic sites (such as national parks, state parks, and private sites) connected to a specific era of American history. Each travel seminar is escorted by a public historian whose lectures provide context for the historic sites to be visited. Local docents and guides provide breadth and depth in the historic stories they share. Local museums with subject appropriate materials are also included, many offering classroom resources for participating teachers.
