With only a minority of Americans under 30 expressing pride in their country, citizens must recommit to a renewal of serious civic education in schools and higher education. The great French observer of America, Alexis de Tocqueville, praised Americans of the 1830s for their reflective, considered patriotism, which blended love of America with the insistence that a free people should debate each other about how best to live up to their founding ideals. Tocqueville identified schooling as one foundation of Americans’ support for self-government. But higher education in the past fifty years has abandoned civic instruction, neglecting the study of American constitutionalism and history and discarding efforts to develop the civic virtues of rational patriotism and civil disagreement. Join Paul Carrese, founding director of the School of Civic & Economic Thought and Leadership at Arizona State University, to hear how America’s past provides a model for a patriotic renewal.
