Library Hour: Truman and the Atomic Bomb

Date & Time

January 27, 2026

|

6:00 PM

Description

After FDR’s death Harry Truman learned from Secretary of War Henry Stimson that America would soon have a weapon unlike any other: the atomic bomb. This technological breakthrough brought a sudden end to the Pacific War and propelled the world into the nuclear age. Ever since, debate has raged over whether President Truman and Henry Stimson, overseer of the Manhattan Project, had any alternative to this momentous choice or other motives in using the bombs. Walk in the shoes of key decision makers as they weighed the military and diplomatic costs of the bombing and learn about the ensuing attempted coup by fanatics within the Japanese government to stop the surrender.

Edward “Ted” Aldrich is the author of The Partnership: George Marshall, Henry Stimson, and the Extraordinary Collaboration that Won World War II. Signed books will be sold at the reception.
