John Jakob Raskob was one of the most colorful members in Union League history. Born to a modest background, Raskob’s boundless energy, ambition, and intelligence brought him into leading positions at Dupont and General Motors. He championed innovative practices such as consumer credit and widespread investment in the stock market, proclaiming that with these tools “everyone ought to be rich”. Elected to the League in the 1910s as a Republican, Raskob became the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee In 1928, causing a clash with League President Otto R. Heiligman, who wanted all members to be “heart and soul Republicans”. After running the unsuccessful presidential campaign of Al Smith that year, Raskob and Smith oversaw the construction of the Empire State Building.
Join Founding Forward for a discussion about Raskob’s life and legacy. Panelists will include David Farber, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Kansas and Raskob biographer, Dr. Pat McGrory, chair of the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities and a descendent of Raskob, and Founding Forward’s own Historian Emeritus, Jim Mundy.
