Library Hour: A New View of Women’s Suffrage

Date & Time

June 16, 2026

|

6:00 PM

Description

The passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 is celebrated as a triumph of voting rights. But that story is more complicated than most people know. Contrary to popular assumptions, the right to vote does not exist in the US Constitution. Just what, then, did the woman suffrage amendment accomplish? Lisa Tetrault, Associate Professor of History at Carnegie Mellon University, reframes 1920 not as an ending, but as a single chapter in a longer, still-unfinished fight over who truly gets to participate in American democracy. Tetrault’s work focuses on the history of gender, race, and American democracy, with an emphasis on social movements and memory.
