In 1776, the American ideals of political freedom emerged along with the foundations of free markets and capitalism. Adam Smith’s publication of The Wealth of Nations fundamentally shifted the way people thought about self-interest and wealth. Smith argued that rational self-interest, free markets, competition, and respect for property rights could help create a prosperous economy that benefited everyone. As the first major theorist of free market capitalism, Adam Smith stands as one of the forefathers of the modern economy and free societies.
Ryan Patrick Hanley is one of the leading experts on Adam Smith. He teaches at Boston College as the J. Joseph Moakley Professor of Political Science and as a Professor of Philosophy.
