Generations of people have been taught that population growth makes resources scarcer. Alarmists have predicted worldwide famines and societal upheaval due to overpopulation. On the contrary, an analysis of prices over the past two centuries shows that resources became more abundant as the population grew. Resources even increased faster than the population―a relationship that Dr. Marian Tupy calls “superabundance.” On average, every additional human being created more value than he or she consumed.
Join Dr. Marian Tupy, Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute’s Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity, to learn how people, inventors, and markets create innovations that overcome shortages, spur economic growth, and raise standards of living. Beyond mere population size, he argues that superabundance rests upon the liberty to speak, disagree, invest, and profit. In other words, to be prosperous, people must be free.
