Civil War Round Table: Man and Myth: Sculpting Lincoln with Harold Holzer

Date & Time

|

6:00 PM

Description

The League House’s Lincoln Memorial Room is dominated by Jakob Otto Schweizer’s bronze statue of President Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address. Schweizer had a prolific sculpting career – and notably shaped the image of Lincoln and the Union with statues across the Gettysburg battlefield, Philadelphia, and beyond. Come learn about the man who crafted one of the greatest depictions of the Great Emancipator from author Harold Holzer. Harold Holzer is the director of Hunter College’s Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute and one of the country’s leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era.

Thanks to the generosity of donors Jon and Karen Sirlin, Founding Forward is proud to share a newly acquired collection of Schweizer’s documents, maquettes, photographs, and other materials. This program will highlight a new exhibit display, featuring Schweizer’s work and life, which will open the following day in the Lincoln Memorial room.

This program will be hosted in-person at the League House. Registration is required.
