November 30, 2024, marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Winston Churchill, one of the greatest statesmen of the 20th century. Born to a British aristocrat and American socialite, he remains a key figure in the Anglo-American alliance.
Churchill served as First Lord of the Admiralty, helping modernize the British navy before WWI. His advocacy for rearmament against Nazi Germany and resistance to appeasement would lead to his becoming Prime Minister in 1940. He became the leader of the free world and had a domestic political career no less exciting.
Sir David Cannadine is Princeton’s Emeritus Dodge Professor of History and has previously held positions at Cambridge, Columbia and London Universities. He has received a Blenheim Award from the International Churchill Society in recognition of his contributions to the memory of Sir Winston. He is also Chairman of the Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
