America is at a crossroads where politicians, news media, and social media fan the flames of toxic partisanship. Many Americans now question whether they can trust their fellow citizens. The resulting polarization and the distrust engendered in civic and government institutions continues to have a corrosive effect on both our representative democracy and society more widely. While social media has made the right to speak easier than ever, the responsibility to listen has been sorely neglected. One answer to partisanship and polarization lies in fostering respect for different opinions through civil dialogue between opposing sides.
