Description

View Founding Forward’s exhibit, A City Divided – The Civil War, Philadelphia, and The Union League, located in the Russell P. Heuer Room of The Union League of Philadelphia. This exhibit explores Philadelphia during the American Civil War – a city divided. Many supported the South and slavery – they openly called for Lincoln to quit the war. In this desperate moment, The Union League of Philadelphia was founded. Its goal was to make the case that Philadelphians supported Lincoln, Union, and abolition.

The exhibit is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday, 3:00 to 6:00 pm, and the second Saturday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm. To visit during these hours, please ring the doorbell at the street-level door on Broad Street. Registration is not required for these public hours.

The exhibit is open to Union League members and their guests, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and the second Saturday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

This exhibit will be closing mid-December 2025 and a new exhibit on the Declaration of Independence will be opening in February 2026.
