Founded during the Civil War, The Union League of Philadelphia supported the war effort to aid the Union and quickly grew to be the most important civic institution in the north. By the end of the war, the League was a major Philadelphia institution, and continues to be a thriving and engaging organization to the present day.
The Union League of Philadelphia collection dates from 1862 to the present day. Much of this collection consists of record books, meeting records, membership records, correspondence, financial records, ephemera, photograph books, material culture, objects, and works of art. The collection includes several Civil War-focused letter collections, diaries, ephemera, etc. Overall, this collection documents the administration, social activities, civic efforts, property development and management, membership, and charitable work of the Union League.
