Lincoln’s 216th Birthday

On February 12, 2025, Founding Forward held their annual Lincoln Day celebration at the Union League of Philadelphia in honor of Abraham Lincoln. The Union League was established in 1862 to support Abraham Lincoln, abolition, and the Union during the American Civil War. The League’s work during the war made it the most important civic institution of the North and created a patriotic movement that helped re-elect Lincoln in 1864.

As a national leader in civic education for students, teachers, and the community, Founding Forward is honored to present the Lincoln Day program annually to its donors and supporters, which includes Union League members and Philadelphians.

This year’s keynote speaker featured Mr. Richard Brookhiser, an American journalist, biographer, historian, and senior editor at National Review. Mr. Brookhiser spoke in depth about Abraham Lincoln, his life, and how the founding fathers, Washington, Paine, and Jefferson, influenced Lincoln both personally and politically.

In front of hundreds of Lincoln Day attendees, Brookhiser said, “Abraham Lincoln was concerned with the Founding Fathers all his life. The most famous statement of it, of course, was at Gettysburg in 1863, when he said, ‘our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty.’”

As we continue to celebrate Lincoln and as we approach President’s Day on February 17, we encourage you to watch or read Mr. Brookhiser’s remarks.

Founding Forward remains committed to providing education and understanding of American history and civic responsibility.

We wish you a happy Lincoln Day!
